Texas Ramp Project

About this Organization

In its 40 years of existence, the Texas Ramp Project (TRP) has provided over 29,000 safe, strong, durable wheelchair ramps for low-income people across Texas, including in every East Texas county. Those ramps, if laid end to end, would extend for 149 miles. More than 75% of those ramps are for Texans 60 or older. In 2024 TRP received over 6,800 referrals, and volunteers built 2,718 ramps in 141 Texas counties. The ramps greatly improve clients' safety, independence and quality of life and allow them to exit their homes more easily in the event of fire or other emergency, especially if they live alone. The ramps provide relief to caregivers, often elderly spouses, and enable clients to remain in their homes, aging in place among family and neighbors who love and care for them. Texas has over 1.7 million residents who have a physical disability that impairs their mobility. Many of these people are low-income and can't afford a ramp. TRP volunteers, who come from their local churches, civic groups, businesses and youth groups, spend a Saturday morning building the ramp. When they go home, they have the pleasure of knowing that in a few hours they have transformed a person's life.
